This Maundy Thursday 4/6, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its public hearing on HB 224, the bill that would essentially return NH to allowing abortion up till birth by repealing the criminal and civil penalties for abortionists who extinguish a life in the womb at or after 24 weeks gestational age. Context: HB 224 removes the enforcement language of our existing late term abortion ban, called the Fetal Life Protection Act, that was passed in 2021 and that became state law in 2022. This would be a worse state of affairs than having no law at all.GOP leadership has indicated its desire to keep the FLPA intact. But as we saw in the House vote on the bill last week, several House Republicans sided with Democrats to support HB 224.The Governor has consistently, publicly indicated his willingness to sign such a bill removing the criminal & civil penalties from the FLPA.While normally the 14-10 Republican majority in the Senate would be cause for hope, we just don’t know how big of an influence that the Governor and his position are having on certain Senators, or we are not assured of their conviction on this issue. This is why we need to speak in defense of the pre-born and have it recorded in heaven and on earth that God’s people in NH stood for this Biblical, moral issue–and that it was not merely a political one. Also Disturbing In testimony before the House Judiciary Committee last month, certain faith community leaders testified in defense of HB 224, indicating that the God’s best solution for women with unexpected pregnancies was abortion! We must both defend God’s character and paint a picture of authentic human thriving for our culture by making it clear that the God we believe in can abundantly provide for both mom and baby–that His abundant LIFE can win.
