Update from Feb. 3 hearing:

6 testified in support, SoS Scanlan opposed

Many questions from committee members

At least two members showed they understood the constitutional issue involved.

Online support/tally (closed at 11:59 pm on Feb. 3) 158 oppose, 41 support.

Excerpt from John Cawthron’s testimony (full testimony attached)

“In the current situation I am being put in the impossible circumstance.

“If I follow my oath, I will be charged with committing a crime.

“If I do what the powers that be in Concord tell me to do, just go along to get along, I am violating my oath.

“So, I ask you. How could anyone with a moral compass perform this job under these conditions?

House Election Law (02/03/2026)

What happens next? There is no executive session scheduled for next week, BUT the House Election Law committee will be conducting hearings on other bills on Feb. 10 that end about noon time. It MAY be meeting in the afternoon to make recommendations on previous bills they have heard, including HB 1223.
